Is Your Paddle Board Paddle Too Long?
For years we have worked tirelessly on defining what the perfect paddle length is. Over time, the numbers have changed and adapted to new information. After a recent epiphany during a discussion with an accomplished paddle boarder, I believe he is on to something! So much so that we have already implemented changes in how we size and cut our custom paddles for clients.
Many paddleboarders have been convinced that a longer paddle gives them a longer reach and a deeper catch. They are correct to an extent, but not in a beneficial way. If you’re drinking our performance stand up Kool Aid, then consider that shorter (to an extent) can be better. This would imply that most paddle size charts are incorrect if you’re looking to become a top notch performance stand up paddler.
A shorter paddle can result in the following benefits;
1.) Better stance and more flexion in the appropriate joints.
2.) A dynamic catch that fully engages and harness the athletic power of the paddler.
3.) A lower center of gravity thus better balance and ability to react to external forces.
4.) Less force loading to your vulnerable shoulder joint.
5.) Increase in MPH.
Check out our new and improved paddle size chart below and let us know what you think!
